How To Apply For SSDI Or SSI

The application is long, but it is not complicated once you know the order of operations. Here is the whole path, step by step.

Denied Long-Term Disability (LTD) through an employer plan or individual policy, not SSDI or SSI? That is a different process. Start with SecureClaim LTD →

Before You Start

Confirm that you are not working above the Substantial Gainful Activity limit, which is $1,690 a month in 2026 ($2,830 if you are blind). Earning above it usually leads to a denial regardless of your condition. Your disability also has to be expected to last at least 12 months or to be terminal.

What To Gather

Having these ready before you start makes the application far smoother:

  • Your Social Security number and basic identity information
  • Names, addresses, and dates for every doctor, clinic, and hospital that has treated you
  • A list of your medications and the conditions they treat
  • Test results and records you already have
  • A work history for the last several years, with job titles and duties
  • Your most recent W-2 or, if self employed, your tax return

Tip. You do not need every record in hand to start. The SSA requests records on your behalf once you sign a medical release (form SSA-827). Your job is to point them to the right places.

Three Ways To Apply

You can apply online at ssa.gov, by phone with the SSA, or in person at a local field office. Online is usually fastest for SSDI. Some SSI claims still require a phone or in person interview, which the SSA will set up.

Completing The Application

There are two core pieces: the benefit application itself and the Adult Disability Report, which asks in detail about your conditions, treatment, and how your symptoms limit daily activities and work. Be specific and concrete. Describe your worst days honestly, not just your average ones, and explain what you can no longer do.

What Happens Next

Your file goes to a state agency called Disability Determination Services, which gathers your medical records and decides the medical question. They may schedule a consultative exam. Initial decisions commonly take several months. If you are denied, you have appeal rights, and the clock on them is strict.
